Google Confirms Small September Algorithm Update

Following the more widely known Medic update in August, Google have recently confirmed that a smaller algorithm change took place during the end of September. Prior to this confirmation, a buzz had already started around Google’s ranking system and whether something had been changed within the core algorithm. Sites that were hit hard by the Medic update were now regaining their ranking and soaring through the SERPs and news posts in particular were performing extremely well.

However, despite being thought to be an adjustment to the main Medic update, it’s not just health and YMYL (Your Money Your Life) sites that are seeing these changes in ranking. Gaming, eCommerce and other sites were also seeing changes in their rankings, though this wasn’t always a rise.

Some sites saw drastic dips and significant surges in the traffic flowing to their website and it was this that first drew attention to the fact that Google might have changed or at least adjusted its algorithm.

Thankfully, Google clued us all in and cleared up speculation with the following statement:

“Our core algorithm is updated all the time. For major updates, we’ll continue to share about those on @searchliaison, as we have been. We haven’t had a major update of that nature, but we did have a smaller one this week.”

While this confirmation doesn’t give us more information as to what this had meant for how we handle search, sites that are making recoveries and seeing spikes in the traffic are certainly thankful for the change.

For the most part, it appears that Google might simply be working to revert the drastic changes in ranking that the Medic algorithm update started, at least where trustworthy sites are concerned. However, with rankings still seeming to surge and dip, it could take another update before everything seems to settle. For now, taking a reactive approach could be the best way to keep up with the ever-changing world of SEO.
