What Does The End Of Magento 1 Mean For Users?

E-commerce companies have relied on Magento software for several years now, using the handy tool to check stock levels, update product descriptions and add high-quality photos to their online business. Until recently, users were able to use Magento 1 happily and stress-free, until an end of life (EOL) for Magento 1 was announced for 18th November next year, forcing all users to embrace Magento 2 software. So, What Is Magento?

For those inexperienced in the software, we’ll give you a brief rundown on what Magento 1 is and why e-commerce sites value it as the best programme. Simply, Magento is similar to WordPress, and used to manage all happenings within an e-commerce business. Users are able to edit product descriptions, as well as actually add new products to their site with all of the sizes that they stock. However, a large section of users on Magento are Community users, and the impact that the Magento 1 EOL will have on these users is still much unknown.

However, since Magento 1 will no longer be supported as of the 18th November 2018, there will be no more security patches available, putting the security of your e-commerce site at risk. Of course, having an insecure e-commerce site is never an option, especially if that’s your default and only method of income. So, moving forward with this Magento shift, you need to decide whether you’re going to replatform the project, or upgrade instead.

What Does The EOL Mean For Different Users?

There are two main users of Magento 1 software – Community Edition (CE) users and Enterprise Edition (EE) users. As already mentioned, the complete impact on CE users is unclear, however as we are aware of the impact the EOL will have on security patches, we can tell that organisations will suffer, particularly those who need to submit to PCI, as well as other security-related audits. As we are aware of the Magento 1 EOL, we can accurately assume that Magento Connect will also be shut down, preventing common commands such as Connect Downloader and ./image from working any longer.

Of course, EE users face the same problems as CE users, however they must deal with a few extra commotions. For years now, there has always been ambiguous business and legal reasons for businesses of a particular size to class themselves as either a CE or EE user. However, whether you think that these are a benefit or just a sales hook, the options will be gone when the EOL commences. But, the major problem that EE users face is the commercially licensed software – specifically if you use it at the pleasure of Magento Inc. Therefore, if you continue to use Magento 1 software after the EOL date, Magento could threaten your e-commerce site with legal action, forcing EE users to embrace Magento 2 or risk their entire business by continuing use of Magento 1.

In order to keep your e-commerce site legal, you will have to act fast to these changes, but what are your overall options? Of course, the first and most obvious option is to accept the EOL of Magento 1 and switch to Magento 2 instead. This might be a difficult transformation to accept, however Magento 2 is a completely new and innovative platform, providing you with new e-commerce solutions. If you do decide to take this plan of action though, you’ll have to take on an entire re-platforming project, and along with its more complex nature, Magento 2 still might not be the best option for every Magento user.

So, if Magento 2 is definitely not an option, you’ll need to find an alternative way to keep your e-commerce site running securely and legally. Firstly, you could use other e-commerce platforms, such as Shopify or Demandware, both of which have risen in popularity over recent years. Or secondly, you could carry on using Magento 1 until they announce the EOL for the platform support. If you decide to do this, the three main things that you need to focus on are keeping security patches, extensions and modules up to date, as well as always adding new content for your customers to enjoy and engage with.

What Are The Benefits Of Moving From M1 to M2?

Rather than adapting your skills to completely new software, you might decide to transfer over to Magento 2 – this is a good choice! Whilst many Magento 1 users are reluctant to embrace this change, Magento 2 can offer a range of new features, all far more advanced than those offered by Magento 1.
